We’re so excited you’re joining us for Words on the Waves 2025! Whether you’ve bought a one-day pass or you’re diving in for the entire weekend, you’re in for something truly special.
If it’s your first time at a writers festival, things can feel overwhelming—but don’t worry. We’ve pulled together our First Timers Guide to Words on the Waves to help you get the most out of your experience.
1) Moving Between Venues is Easy
There’s a gentle 7-minute stroll between the two event venues, and we’ve built in a 30-minute buffer between sessions so you’re never rushing. Want to skip the walk or avoid the rain? Hop on our shuttle bus, which runs between venues all day.
2) What to Pack
A few small things can make your day way more enjoyable. Here’s what we recommend:
• A water bottle (some venues get warm)
• Snacks, especially if you lose track of time chatting
• A notebook and pen—perfect for jotting down quotes, author names, or brilliant ideas
• A raincoat, just in case
3) What to Wear
Comfort is key. You’ll be sitting a lot, so choose clothes you’re happy in for a few hours.
Layers are your best friend—some venues are cold in the morning, but can get warm, later on while the weather outside might be cooler. So, make sure you wear something warm that you can easily remove.
And if you’re walking between venues? Comfy shoes and a raincoat are smart choices.
4) What To Do Between Sessions (If You’re Staying Put)
There’s a lot of listening during the festival, so it’s great to use breaks to stretch your legs. Grab a coffee, explore the bookstalls, or even take the time to chat with one of the authors. It’s the perfect opportunity to soak in the atmosphere and maybe make a new friend with another book lover.
5) Haven’t Read Any of the Books?
You’re definitely not alone. Many people come to discover what they want to read next at the festival. The Umina Beach Book Nook will be there with a wonderful range of books by festival authors and interviewers—so you can start building your reading list on the spot.
6) Can I bring my own books for signing?
Absolutely! Authors happily sign your personal copies (we prefer paper!). Having said that, it’s great to support the festival bookseller if you can. So if you already have a book perhaps consider purchasing one by a different author. It’s a lovely way to create a lasting memory of the day.
7) Charge Your Phone
Sure, you’ll be switching it off during sessions, but you’ll want it handy for quick snaps, festival selfies, and maybe even that perfect Instagram story. Don’t forget to tag your photos with #wordsonthewaves2025!
8) Bring Your Questions
Most sessions include a Q&A, so if you’ve ever wanted to ask an author something, now’s your chance. Not great at thinking on the spot? Jot your questions down in your notebook beforehand.
9) Feeling Shy or Overwhelmed?
You’re not the only one. One attendee once said that walking into a venue full of book lovers can feel intimidating—but a simple smile or asking, “Have you read this author before?” can spark some truly great conversations. Of course, if flying solo is more your thing, that’s perfectly fine too. You can absolutely enjoy the festival quietly, moving between talks, sipping coffee, and browsing books at your own pace.
10) Have fun!
At the end of your Words on the Waves experience, we hope you leave with a full heart (and maybe a full bag of books too). You’ll probably feel a beautiful mix of inspired, content—and yes, maybe a bit tired. That’s okay. Festivals like this fill us up with stories, laughter, ideas, and connection. And when your brain catches up with your heart, you just might find yourself looking for your next festival – or your next great read.
We hope you love your time at Words on the Waves 2025—and who knows? Maybe we’ll see you again next year.
The 2025 Main Program is now sold out but we’d love to see you at our fun-loving festival marquee, The Dip. Check out the Saturday 31 May program for adults here or the Free Family Fun Day on Sunday 1 June here.
