Ten Top Tips for a super fun time at our FREE Family Fun Day!

Family Fun DayWe can’t wait to see you all at our FREE Family Fun Day on Sunday 2 June but we do know any outing with kids can feel a bit like a military exercise so here are some tips to make the most of your day…

  1. You don’t have to have read books by the authors to enjoy your day but it can add to the fun if you have. So why not pop to your local library or bookstore and see if you can find a book by one of our amazing authors or illustrators so you’ll be in the know before you even arrive.
  2. All our author’s books will be on sale at the festival and the authors will be available to sign them, so give a bit of thought to upcoming birthdays or special occasions before you come. What could make a better gift or memory of a wonderful day out than a specially signed book?
  3. The authors will be happy to take photos with kids so don’t forget to charge your phone before you come.
  4. Snacks! If you’ve got kids you definitely know how important snacks can be. Bringing some food that’s not too noisy or messy to eat can make or break your day.
  5. A bit of normal kid’s noise in the sessions is fine. The authors and illustrators know that little people need to wriggle and whisper (or yell) sometimes and that’s fine. Equally, if it’s  all is feeling a bit overwhelming feel free to pop out of the marquee as you need. And you’re welcome to come back in too.
  6. Authors and illustrators LOVE questions. So please encourage your kids (and yourselves) to ask anything you like. Maybe even talk about questions to ask before you come…
  7. There will be lots going on in the Peninsula Recreation Precinct, not just in  the marquee, so keep your eyes open and your camera at the ready.
  8. As well as all the free activities and talks there are also some workshops that you need to book in to. Why not check them out here Family Fun Day 2024 | Words on the Waves
  9. The talks and many of the activities will be undercover in our marquee but there will also be lots going on outside so dress for the weather (fingers crossed you’ll need hats not raincoats!)
  10. Hopefully your kids (and even the grown ups) will be super inspired by all things creative so consider keeping some time for reading, writing and drawing in the days that follow the festival. Maybe your family could even have a ‘draw off’ just like our illustrators!
