The Words on the Waves Schools Program is back

After delivering an enriching and educational series of author events for Central Coast primary school students in 2021, the Words on the Waves Schools Program is back

Words on the Waves is a not-for-profit literary festival, the first of its kind for the Central Coast region. In addition to year-round event programming for adult readers, it seeks to foster literacy and creativity on the Central Coast for the next generation of writers and readers with its Primary and Secondary Schools Program.

This program has the aim of creating and encouraging a community of readers, writers, and storytellers by connecting students with Australia’s best loved children’s authors. With the Central Coast home to 71 government schools, 24 private and Catholic schools and four special schools – totalling over 60,000 school-aged children – this is a large community, underserved for literacy and capacity-building opportunities.

In 2021, the Schools Program celebrated the theme ‘Youth as Warriors of Change’ and featured Children’s Laureate Ursula Dubosarsky, Indigenous authors Kirli Saunders and Dub Leffler, alongside Yvette Poshoglian, Susanne Gervay, Deb Abela and more. It welcomed over 1200 student attendances and from more than 10 Central Coast primary schools.

In 2022, the Schools Program will take place across Wednesday June 1 and Thursday June 2 and will offer an exciting array of author panels and interactive workshops with the following authors and more:

Jacqueline Harvey (author of the bestselling Alice-Miranda series)

Katrina Nannestad (NSW Premier’s Award winning author of We Are Wolves)

Sami Bayly (natural history illustrator and author of The Encyclopedia of Ugly Animals)

Charlotte Barkla (one-time physics teacher, author of The Edie Experiment series)

Yvette Poshoglian (author of the Ella and Olivia series)

Nat Amoore (podcaster and author of The Power of Positive Pranking)

Dub Leffler (Indigenous illustrator based on the Central Coast)

& more, browse the full program here.

Words on the Waves Festival Schools Program Coordinator Jacqui Barton says:

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Central Coast students to rub shoulders with published authors at live appearances, take part in interesting workshops and discover inspiration to feed their curiosity and help them create great stories.”
