Media Release: Sneak peek of the Words on the Waves launch event

A new writers’ festival will be held on  the Central Coast, NSW over the June long weekend (12 – 13) in 2021.

To be known as the Words on the Waves Writers Festival, this inaugural event will take place over these two days with a School’s Program also running in the festival precinct of Umina Beach on Friday June 11.

The festival will be launched with a one-day celebration at Wagstaffe Hall on Saturday March 27, 2021, hosted by the Bouddi Society. Composed of four author sessions, the festival can reveal Tom Keneally AO, author of Schindler’s Ark and patron of the Bouddi Foundation for the Arts, together with his daughter Meg who was co-author of the Monsarrat series, will be in attendance. More leading authors with a link to the area will be released closer to the date, along with the opportunity to purchase tickets.

In commenting on the upcoming event, the President of the Bouddi Society, Phil Donnelly, says, “Any kind of celebration enriches a community, but one such as this, which highlights the great benefits that literature brings to all our lives, is particularly notable. The Bouddi Society is very pleased to be part of it.”

Words on the Waves Writers Festival on the June Long Weekend will see a diverse range of writers come together to celebrate writing, literature, and Australia’s cultural and environmental future. With two days of storytelling, author talks and panels, the festival’s aim is to connect with each other, with inspiration, with environment and with country.

With a council population much larger than Byron Shire, but with a similarly spectacular landscape, the region is calling out for a writers’ festival. The festival venue is a stone’s throw from the beach, with a panoramic coastal view. As the first writers’ festival of its scale and calibre to take place in the Central Coast, but also within easy distance to Sydney and Newcastle, it aims to become an annual institution for both community members and visitors from across NSW and Australia.

Words on the Waves Writers Festival has already released its all-day School’s Program for primary school children local to the Central Coast, for Friday June 11, 2021. In partnership with the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), the program’s theme is ‘Youth as Warriors of Change’. Speakers include Ursula Dubosarsky (Children’s Laureate 2020-2021), Dub Leffler, Susanne Gervay, Yvette Poshoglian, Kirli Saunders, Oliver Phommavanh, Deb Abela and more. It promises to be an educational and culturally enriching experience for the participating schools.
